History & Purposes

HISTORY

The Delta Kappa Gamma Society was founded on May 11, 1929 at the University of Texas, in Austin. Dr. Annie Web Blanton conceived the idea of an organization for women educators. The Delta Kappa Society is an international organization, which includes the United States, Canada, Norway, Sweden, Mexico, Finland, Guatemala, Iceland, The Netherlands, Puerto Rico,, Great Britain, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Germany, Estonia, Panama and Japan. Three years later the Oklahoma Gamma State was formed in 1932 at the Oklahoma City Biltmore Hotel. Delta Kappa Gamma Nu Chapter was then established in the thriving city of Bartlesville on April 6, 1940. Visit the Oklahoma DKG website.

Julia Walker Black organized the Washington, Nowata and Osage County region and it became the Nu Chapter. DKG Nu began with 12 very enthusiastic charter members in 1940. Membership grew quickly and by 1974 there were more than 80 members.


PURPOSES

  1. To unite women educators of the world in a genuine spiritual fellowship.

  2. To honor women who have given or who evidence a potential for distinctive service in any field of education.

  3. To advance the professional interest and position of women in education.

  4. To initiative, endorse, and support desirable legislation or other suitable endeavors in the interest of education and of women educators.

  5. To endow scholarships to aid outstanding women educators in pursuing graduate study and to grant fellowships to women educators from other countries.

  6. To stimulate the personal and professional growth of appropriate programs of action.

  7. To inform the members of current economic, social, political and education issues so that they may participate effectively in a world society.
